The Curator's Biases

Who decides which athletes get celebrated? That's me — Ellen. I started watching basketball in 2009, fell in love with the Thibabull era, and never really left. Sport, and basketball in particular, is about timing and eras — a reflection of the society and culture we live in. Here's what shapes my lens:

• Underdogs — Making it to the NBA is one of the hardest things to do in the world. I have a deep affinity for great defenders, role players, and journeymen — the ones who are not the superstars but the glue to a championship team, the ones with that dog in them to fight the best they can every night.
• Eras — It started with the Thibabulls, and I've followed the players to other teams, seen the rise of Steph Curry and the Warriors, LeBron's greatness. Along the way I've picked up players I've admired — you'll see them here. And having been to MSG, the Mecca, I do have a soft spot for the Knicks too.
• Women's basketball — As a woman, seeing the explosion of media coverage on the women's game lately has been a dream come true. We'll cover all archetypes and eras here — superstars included. They've been underrepresented long enough and deserve their flowers across the board.
• Australians — Proud Aussie here. I'll always be keeping an eye on my fellow Australians. The explosion of Aussie talent and their pathways into the big leagues has been a joy to watch.
