The Celebration

Not A Casual Fan is a celebration of the athletes who rarely get their flowers — across every sport, every era, every team. The role players, the journeymen, the ones who showed up every week without the headlines to match. For the niche of the niche, we're composing odes that celebrate them, for you to enjoy.

The Curator's Biases

Who decides which athletes get celebrated? That's me — Ellen. I grew up in Australia playing sports every Saturday. Not only did I love playing, I love watching it. As I've grown up, I've come to love what sport brings — competition, community, and plenty of banter along the way. Here are my biases:

  • Sports — The sports I follow intensely: Basketball, Football (soccer), Rugby League, and NFL. And then there are the sports I'm not as intense about but could watch all day long — Tennis and Cricket.
  • Basketball — It started with the Thibabulls in 2010. I fell in love with that team, followed the mob bench across the NBA, and witnessed the Steph Curry era and LeBron's greatness along the way. My soft spot is always for the role players, the journeymen, the glue guys — the backbone of every championship team. The ones with that dog in them, especially on the defensive end (get that sh** out of there!). And having been to MSG, I do have a soft spot for the Knicks.
  • Women — As a woman, seeing the explosion of media coverage on the women's game has been a dream come true. We'll cover all archetypes and eras here — superstars included. They've been underrepresented long enough and deserve their flowers across the board.
  • Australia — Proud Aussie here. I'll always be keeping an eye on my fellow Australians — the explosion of Aussie talent finding their way into the big leagues has been a joy to watch. And I'll also cheer on our fellow Kiwis and Pacific Islanders across the sea.

The Community

There is no gatekeeping on who counts as a fan — everyone is welcome here. You don't need credentials, years of watching, or the right allegiances. If you love the game, or you're just starting to, you belong here. Dive in and learn as you go. That's the point.
